I've long been curious about how tall people really are in photographs. What started as a simple curiosity evolved into a data-driven experiment thanks to the capabilities of AI technology.
AI can now estimate height based on an individual’s head and foot positions in an image, and even analyze the front and back height of shoes to calculate expected height increase. It goes beyond what the human eye can detect—like whether someone is standing slightly forward or how the camera angle affects perception.
When multiple images are uploaded in bulk, AI can even filter out low-resolution or unsuitable images. Moreover, if you provide a specific time segment from a YouTube video and details like the outfit color, the AI can factor that into its prediction for even greater accuracy.
🧪 Case Study: Soojin Kim vs. Nayun Ahn
In the early 2000s, Soojin Kim—a renowned supermodel—was publicly known to be over 180 cm tall. Her exact height, however, remained a topic of interest for years.
In a recent golf-focused YouTube video, she appeared alongside golfer Nayun Ahn, who is around 174 cm tall. The height difference was clearly visible. After capturing four key stills from the video, the AI tool predicted Soojin’s height to be approximately 183.9 cm. This result aligned closely with the initial estimate of 184.5 cm, lending strong credibility to the method.
